Knowing God

Here are some thoughts on knowing and walking with God. It's not a list of steps, it's more of an introduction to someone you really need to develop a relationship with.

How can you know Jesus and his forgiveness? Talk to him. Tell him you want to know him.

Admit you've sinned and need his forgiveness. Sinful actions separate us from God.

Ask him to be your Savior and Lord. Jesus is Lord, so let him be your boss.

Confess Jesus is the son of God, that he died for your sins, rose from the dead and is alive today.

Jesus asks you to follow him. Say yes and ask for his power to turn from sin and obey him and his word: The Bible. Thank him for what he's done. Go ahead and enjoy being with him, talking to him and reading the Bible. It’s OK to enjoy your fellowship with him. In fact, that's God's great delight.

Here are some good verses from the Bible you should read. Really. Some are sad things you just need to know. And some are the most wonderful things you'll ever know. Please take time and read them. Look them up in your own Bible if you have one. You can mark them, underline them. That's OK to do. If you don't have a Bible, you can click on them and read them online.

You should read the Bible for yourself. Read it a lot. Read it every day. It’s best to have a Bible that’s in plain, modern English or whatever your native language is.

As you read, ask him to speak things to your heart. This is the main way God will speak to you. Ask him to show himself to you as you read. Ask him to show you the great love he has for you, his child. Ask him to show you what he wants you to do and how he wants you to live.

Talk to Jesus a lot. It’s called prayer, but keep it simple and just talk to him like you normally talk. It doesn't need to be fancy or "spiritual" at all. Let him know your heart, your needs, your concerns, your desires. Tell him about your love for him.

When you sin, don’t hide from him. Tell him about it and ask his forgiveness. He promises to forgive you.

Avoid sin, but when you do sin again, don’t start hiding it from him. Tell him about it again and ask his forgiveness again. He’s with you in the journey. Ask him for power to resist evil temptations. Ask him to fill you with the Holy Spirit.

Talk to him. He’s not looking for all the right words. He’s looking at your heart.

It's really a good idea to start meeting with other people who love Jesus and believe the Bible. Ask God to guide you to a good church where you can fellowship, learn, grow and be a part.

Remember, Jesus loved you enough to die for you. He's for you! Don’t knock yourself out trying to be perfect. Just do what he says and let him change you as he wants to day by day. Just be willing and obedient to do what he asks. It’s all for your good. He cares for you very much.

It’s always good to tell others what Jesus has done for you. Tell them about his love. Ask him to help you share his love with others. There’s probably someone around you that’s hurting and needs to hear about it. If you're too shy, just relax and ask him to help you. He will.
